The Saints go marching on

Southampton 1 West Ham 0

After a first half spent watching The Only Way is Essex and Made In Chelsea with my wife and teenage daughter, managed to find a radio commentary on LBC. My fellow season-ticket holder Nigel was at St Mary's and summed the game up thus via his texts:

Half-time: 1-0 Great atmosphere. Hammers fail to mark big defender. We've played ok but they have had more pressure. Our midfield are 2nd best.
75 mins: WH playing much better but have blown several good chances, had good call for a pen.
Full-time: Bit unlucky to lose, lots of pressure 2nd half, hit post, still lack a bit of quality.

Noble seems to have improved the side second half (maybe getting dropped is the jolt he needed). Not sure why Collison was dropped after scoring either. Big Sam agrees that we should have had a point if Nolan, Baldock and Carew had converted their chances. The Saints 17th straight home win, so no disgrace to lose, but that five point gap is worrying.

On LBC Clive Walker (who used to get a lot of grief from the North Bank) had a go at our supposed long-ball game. A couple of phone-in callers from Basildon did likewise. Can't see we're playing a long-ball game myself, and having scored four against Watford, Forest, Portsmouth and Blackpool we can't say there haven't been goals. It's an easy tag to give to an Allardyce team, but generally we've played a mixed game of short and long passing. As for scoring from set pieces, that's been a welcome change this season.

Not a good result, but if our strikers can score in the big matches then we can still get in the top two.

Hi never really replied to the blogs that I read but had to reply, if anybody can say that we did not play long ball football last night then I was watching a different game totally. Reid is never going to a west ham centre half as his distribution is shocking . McCartney has one ball , no pace and does not get forward enough . Faubert has had his good game for the season at palace.Nolan has got to concentrate on playing and not having a go at the ref ALL THE TIME . Lansbury has not played well since his debut . We were second best all over the pitch last night and deserved what we got . Southampton played excellent football all night . In fact we gave played 3 good teams and got a point , Leeds draw, Ipswich and last night enough said. Baldock is the only player who looks a player at the moment , we ate treating collinson
in a shocking way . Why did he not come on instead of freddie piq, he is not interested anc should have been loaned to Doncaster . This league is poor it must be if we are second . We are not playing good football and I can't see it changing much the way allardyce sets the team up . The atomsphere at home is poor and compared to last night not a patch on Southampton . Hopefully it will change but I fear not

Thanks for the input, Russell. I wasn't at the game but it sounds like we were second best. Possibly we play more long balls away from home and when Carew is in the side. The home games haven't been great, but we have played some football at times, such as against Portsmouth and Blackpool.
Agree that Collison deserved a start and to come on instead of Freddie and we've not done it against the bigger teams. Have to hope Allardyce is right and that when everyone's fit we improve.

Your 'friends' at Milwall are an interesting bunch...follow the link below to see their response to the Wolves protest. Friendly lot!

Very eloquent response from the Dirty Den!

Apparently Lansbury has done his knee now, and is out for several weeks. Add that to Bentley being out for the season, Cole never being fit, Demel being bought injured, and still being unable to make his debut, Tomkins and Taylor both out, Green out....I thought Alladyce was supposed to improve our injury record? it is just as appalling as ever. You would expect no better from Millwall, hope they enjoy the third division and big games against Stevenage and Crawley. And if Wolves have lost 5 games in a row - that would have been a good run of form for Avram...

And now it looks like Diouf is going to be signed...I am getting a bad feeling about this season.

Please say it ain't so... not Diouf. That rumour has been flying about all season but hopefully it is paper talk only. Sure he'd go down well when we play Millwall...

The injury record is worrying, as you say. Hopefully Demel will be fit soon. We also have a lot of older players now which might be a factor... though it could be the training.
